The Southern Railway ran ads in national magazines to promote development along the company's rail lines. As they touted the South's importance in the national economy, the advertisements tried to encourage businesses to move to the South.

The South, like the rest of the country in the 1920s, relied on trains for transporting goods. Some 75 to 80 percent of all U.S. intercity freight went by rail.
