During
the 16th and 17th centuries, observers of dissections included
medical students, scholars, and the general public. A dissection
was a social gathering and a form of entertainment. The title
page from the 1543 first edition of De humani corporis fabrica,
by Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564), depicts Vesalius performing
a dissection in a theatre-like atmosphere.
