May I schedule a visit?

While no reservations are required to visit, we do ask that you complete our online registration form. These registrations help us to better serve visiting groups.

We offer an exciting array of programs as part of our daily schedule.   While we do not provide private guided tours, we do have a number of suggestions for organizing a self-guided visit, including a variety of printable self-guides, on our Plan Your Field Trip page.

There is no admission fee to enter the Museum and programs are free of charge unless otherwise noted.  A helpful tip: because programs are subject to change, please check at the Museum’s 1st floor Information Desk or 2nd floor Welcome Center to confirm the day’s schedule and to pick up a map.


Where can I find lessons or activities from the Museum?

All of the Museum’s online educational resources--including lesson plans, activities, interactives, and media--can be found at Smithsonian’s History Explorer. The materials on the site are searchable by keyword, grade level, historical era, and national standards.

Do your programs travel to classrooms?

The Museum provides national outreach to students via the web.  In addition to hundreds of online resources, the museum offers an annual webcast event for secondary students, the National Youth Summit rogram, each spring and is planning an electronic field trip program for elementary students.  

For information on upcoming webcasts and other live online programming, please register for the Museum’s monthly email newsletter and select “For Educators.” For archived versions of past Summits, videos of the Museum’s theater programs, or other online materials, please visit Smithsonian’s History Explorer.

How can I find out about new resources for educators?

Sign up for our monthly e-newsletter and be sure to check the category “For Educators” to receive information about new resources, tours, and events for educators and their students.  The Smithsonian’s History Explorer site offers an RSS feed so you can be notified of new content as soon as it’s posted. You can also follow our educators on Twitter or start a conversation with us online in Edmodo.

May I schedule a professional development session?

Yes.  A limited number of 90-minute workshops on object–based learning, STEM-integration, and using drama in the classroom are available for groups of 10+ participants who are planning a visit to the Museum, or introductions to resources via webinar for offsite groups. Our schedule fills quickly, so please try to contact the Museum a minimum of  4 weeks prior to date of the proposed workshop or webinar. Please note that workshops do not include a guided tour of the Museum. Please email the education team at historyteachers@si.edu for additional information or to request a workshop session or webinar. Include the name of the group, preferred date, number of teachers, and the grade levels and subjects the participants teach.
