Rights and Reproductions
Important Announcement!
The Archives Center will be moving temporarily during the spring of 2012 to a smaller space to accommodate a major renovation of the National Museum of American History building. We will continue to provide our usual rights and reproduction services during this period (2012–2014), although the move of our collections to off-site storage will impact response time.
For further details, please contact the Archives Center’s reference desk at 202-633-3270 or at archivescenter@si.edu

Rights and Reproductions
Many of the documents, photographs, images, films, videos, and audio materials in Archives Center collections may be reproduced. Availability for reproduction is determined by the following considerations:
Permission
- A duplication application must be completed and submitted to the Archives Center for review and approval.
Copyright, Trademark, and other Intellectual Property Rights
The Smithsonian Institution does not hold copyright, trademark, or other intellectual property rights for most of the materials in the Archives Center’s collections. Intellectual property rights including copyright, right to publicity, and right to privacy may need to be cleared before the Archives Center can make copies available. The user must provide the Archives Center with written permission from the owner of the rights before copies will be produced.
Condition
Archives Center allows duplication only of collections materials that are in stable condition. The staff will not duplicate items that are too fragile or may be damaged by the duplication process.
Fees
- Usage and cost-recovery fees are charged. For a listing of Archives Center services and fees click here.
- Credit line information will be provided with the copies once payment has been received.
