IN-DEPTH INFORMATION ABOUT THE COLLECTION

Administrative/Biographical History:

Sam DeVincent was born January 8, 1918, and lived primarily in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He collected sheet music and related materials during most of his lifetime. His interest included both the music and the cover art. Because he had little money to support his collecting, DeVincent gathered most of his material through careful searches and travel.

DeVincent and his wife used the music he collected in their musical group, Nancy Lee and the Hilltoppers.  The group performed regularly on radio station WOWO in Fort Wayne, Indiana, from 1945 to 1955. After 1955 (and the emergence of rock and roll), Nancy Lee and the Hilltoppers played weekly on the radio station. At this time, DeVincent worked as an all-night disc jockey at WOWO. In 1960 he became music director and music librarian at the station. His position as music librarian helped him to add to his collection.

DeVincent retired from WOWO in 1983. He and his wife continued to perform publicly including their weekly radio show on WOWO. The National Museum of American History acquired the DeVincent collection in the spring of 1988. Sam DeVincent passed away November 29, 1997.

A more complete introduction to the DeVincent collection, written by John Edward Hasse, Curator of American Music, National Museum of American History, is found in the Introduction to this Collection.

Scope and Content:

Series 11, Entertainment, 1841-1984, undated, contains more than12,500 pieces of sheet music and other materials documenting the development of and popular attitudes towards entertainers and entertainment in the United States. Note that movies and some musical entertainment are also covered in Series 6, Moving Pictures and Movie Stars, and in Series 16, Country, Western and Folk Music. The materials are arranged by subject, with ephemera arranged in the same subseries as the sheet music and described following the container list. The ephemera has been placed in eighteen document boxes. News articles about Elvis Presley form a large part of this section.

Subseries 1, Early Troupes and Bandmasters, 1841-1944, undated. Most of the covers have images of troupe members. Nine different troupes, most notably the Hutchisons, are in separate folders and twelve others are in a folder together. Arthur Pryor is the only bandmaster with a separate folder; there are others in another folder. Note that Merle Evans is in subseries 16, Circus, Fair, Zoo.

Subseries 2, Dance Bands and Orchestras, 1905-1964, undated. The covers of these sheets feature photos of bandleaders and, in many cases, the band members. Female bandleaders are in a separate folder. The end of this subseries consists of big band theme songs. Note that in Folders CCCC-NNNN, Miscellaneous Male Bandleaders, the sheets are arranged alphabetically by last name of the band leader and not by song title.

Subseries 3, Novelty Bands, 1901-1952, consists of folders for four bands: Spike Jones, Kidoodlers, Korn Kobblers, and Fisher’s (Fischer) Schnickelfritz Band.

Subseries 4, Male Singers (Individual), 1846-1981, covers a long and varied period of American popular song, from early entertainers like Dan Bryant, to Enrico Caruso, to Eddie Cantor, to Elvis Presley. Some singers are in subseries 13, Phonographs and Sound Recordings; in Series 6, Moving Pictures and Movie Stars; in Series 16, Country, Western, and Folk Music; or with other singers in this series. These notes are in the container list. Also note: the items in folders PPPP-TTTT, Miscellaneous Singers, are arranged alphabetically by the last name of the singer and not by song title.

Subseries 5, Female Singers (Individual), 1845-1971, spans over one hundred years beginning with early entertainers such as Miss Lyllian Poole and Jenny Lind, and continuing through vaudeville, musical theater, and band singers. Some female singers can be found in subseries 13, Phonographs and Sound Recordings; in Series 6, Moving Pictures and Movie Stars; and in Series 16, Country, Western, and Folk Music. Note that the singers in folders NNN-UUU, Miscellaneous Singers, are arranged alphabetically by last name of the singer and not by song title.

Subseries 6, Male and Mixed Duos and Groups, 1903-1981, comprises male-only and male/female duos and groups. See Series 16, Country, Western, and Folk Music for more singers. Also see subseries 11, Theater; subseries 13, Phonographs and Sound Recordings; and subseries 14, Radio, Transistor, and Wireless. Note that the music in Folders N-Q is arranged alphabetically by group name and not by song title. Female-only groups are in subseries 7.

Subseries 7, Female Duos and Groups, 1896-1966, are primarily sister groups, with the Andrews Sisters having the largest portion. See Series 16, Country, Western, and Folk Music for more singers. Note that the music in folders S-V, Miscellaneous Groups, is arranged alphabetically by group name and not by song title.

Subseries 8, Child Entertainers, 1852-1927, undated, includes Master Adams with Kunkel’s Nightingale Opera Troupe, Blind Tom (Bethune), and Josef Hofmann. Also see child movie stars in Series 6, Moving Pictures and Movie Stars.

Subseries 9, Male and Female Impersonators, 1904-1982, contains three folders, two dedicated to Julian Eltinge and Karyl Norman, and a third with eight performers including Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie.

Subseries 10, Actors and Comedians, 1853-1982, includes performers who are/were better known for their roles as actors/comedians than as singers. Some of the covers have images of early performers such as Laura Keene, Edwin Booth, and the Barrymores. Also see subseries 11, Theater; subseries 14, Radio, Transistor, Wireless; subseries 15, Television; and Series 6, Moving Pictures and Movie Stars. Note that folders Q-T are arranged alphabetically by performers’ names and not by song titles.

Subseries 11, Theater, 1873-1973, undated, is arranged as follows: songs about the theater, villains, vaudeville, musical theater, and Ziegfeld. Note that some vaudeville entertainers are in subseries 10, Actors and Comedians.

Subseries 12, Jukebox, Nickelodeon, 1923-1981, has songs about or covers that feature jukeboxes and nickelodeons.

Subseries 13, Phonographs and Sound Recordings, 1878-1971, consists primarily of songs about the phonograph, records, or tapes. One folder features cover pictures of phonograph artists.

Subseries 14, Radio, Transistor, Wireless, 1898-1984. The first section consists of songs about these inventions and includes one folder with songs about disc jockeys. Songs with cover photos of specific DJs are in folders V-BB. The second section, folders I-BB, contains music with covers depicting radio personalities, announcers, and entertainers. The final section contains miscellaneous radio stations and shows.

Subseries 15, Television, 1931-1987. Folder A contains songs about television. Folders B-H contain TV show theme songs and/or TV show advertisers; note that these folders are organized by the name of the show and not by the song title.

Subseries 16, Circus, Fair, Zoo, 1850-1982, is organized as follows: General Songs about the Circus; Barnum & Bailey and Ringling; Clowns, Harlequins, Jester, and Jugglers; The Flying Trapeze; Elephants; Zoo/Menagerie; Fairs; and Merry-go-round, Ferris Wheel, and Calliope.

Ephemera, 1897-1988, undated, contains primarily promotional and publicity materials and advertisements arranged in the same subseries as the sheet music. A detailed description follows this container list. Ephemera boxes are shelved at the end of the Series boxes.
