The dates on these sheets run as follows--1800s: 3; 1820s: 5; 1830s: 22; 1840s: 16; 1850s:
10; 1860s: 7; 1870s: 5; 1880s: 10; and nine of uncertain date. The music includes both piano
solo and piano/vocal arrangements. The early imprints include lithographic covers, many with
illustrations of sailboats and sailing ships. (72 items)
E, Paddle Steamers, ca. 1840-1889:
Most items are pre-Civil War. The lithographic covers are generally detailed depictions of specific
ships. (11 items)

The bulk of this material is from the 1900s to the 1940s. These generally are songs about
or covers depicting ocean ships or sailboats. Many songs use boats metaphorically for love
and courtship (e.g. Just a Stowaway On a Ship of Dreams). There are several songs about pirates.
A few military pieces are included, but the Armed Forces Series (2) should be consulted for
naval history. (ca. 240 items)

The bulk of this material is from the 1890s to the 1910s. All of the pieces are for solo
piano. Most of the music is marches or waltzes; also included are reveries and programmatic
pieces. Covers feature drawings or photographs of ships or sailboats. Many pieces are about
actual ships and give detailed pictures of the outside of the vessel and several inside views
(e.g. The Empress of Ireland Waltz). Also included are several warships. (47 items)

Most of the material dates from the 1840s to the 1870s. Both instrumental (solo piano) and
vocal music is included. All pieces are about shipwrecks, maritime disasters, and rescues.
Most pieces are about actual shipwrecks and relate the story of the disaster, if a vocal work,
and often have a photograph of the ship or an artist's rendition of the disaster on the cover.
The 1854 wreck of Captain Creighton's ship "Three Bell" inspired many composers
and lithographers. Many of the early imprints have detailed lithographic illustrations. There
are several works each by Henry Russell and Henry C. Work (including The Ship That Never Returned).

Folders S-T have 34 items; folder U has 19 items. The latest piece dates from 1982, but most
of the material dates from the year of the shipwreck, 1912. There are imprints from many small
firms from around the country and one Yiddish imprint. Folder U contains photocopies of sheet
music not in the DeVincent collection. (53 items)

V, The "Lusitania," 1908-1915:
The 1908 imprint is from before the shipwreck and the three items from 1915 are about the
disaster. (4 items)
W - X, Canoeing and Rowing, ca. 1900-1979:

Folders W-X contain both vocal and instrumental music. Almost all of the material is from
the 1900s to 1930s. Most of the songs and covers are about courtship. (51 items)
Y, Paddle Steamers, ca. 1890-1969:
About half of the material is from the 1910s. Many of the songs are about the Mississippi
River, the southern states, and contain images of Afro-Americans. Both instrumental and vocal
music is included. (46 items)
Z, Motorboats, 1908-1950: (10 items)
AA, Ferries, Locks, and Canals, ca. 1860-1969:
Most of the material is from the 1900s to the 1930s. Several songs about the Erie Canal (N.Y.)
