Series Descriptions

Series 9: Mounted and Un-mounted Newspaper Clippings,1958-1973 (11.7 cu. ft.; 8 DB, 5F/O, 7RB) consists of nationally and internationally published newspaper and magazine articles documenting the tours, performances, and television appearances of Duke Ellington and the Duke Ellington Orchestra between 1958 and 1973. The clippings were compiled for the Duke Ellington Organization by clipping services Burelles, Inc., Livingston, New Jersey; Vital Information Press, Brooklyn, New York; Luce International of New York, New York, and Associated Press Clippings, London, England.

The clippings document Ellington's activities in the United States and are an extension of the scrapbook series, Series 8, that documents Ellington's international tours and some early American performances between 1933 and 1958 that were reported by international news services. The news clippings for the years 1960-1961 can be found within Volume 22 of the Duke Ellington scrapbook, Series 8. The clippings are organized into two groups, mounted newspaper clippings and unmounted clippings. The mounted clippings are on unbound scrapbook pages and are arranged chronologically by the earliest dates that appear on each group of scrapbook pages. The unmounted news clippings are arranged chronologically by the postal cancellation dates stamped on each envelope of clippings sent to the Duke Ellington organization. The envelopes have been included with each group of clippings. The span dates for these news clippings vary between folders and only represent the dates of materials compiled and sent to the Ellington organization by Burelles, Inc. Of particular interest are clippings with caricatures of Ellington and other African-American performers such as Harry Belafonte and Diahann Carroll in the Atlanta Journal, February 19, 1966; the 1959 premiere performance at Hunter College of Ellington's Queen Suite, written for England's Queen Elizabeth II; and an Ellington concert following a Detroit Pistons and St. Louis Hawks professional basketball game in 1960.
