SOCIETY FOR THE HISTORY OF TECHNOLOGY (SHOT) RECORDS, 1956-1998, #400

(95 cubic feet;  285 DB)

by: Robert S. Harding, 1999

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The SHOT Records are divided into two divisions:

I. GENERAL RECORDS, 1956-1996, which consist mainly of papers generated and received by Melvin Kranzberg in his various roles as an officer in SHOT.   Also included are contributions of the papers of recent officers of the organization.

II. TECHNOLOGY AND CULTURE RECORDS, 1958-1995, which consist of material relating to the Society's journal, Technology and Culture.  A Series Description of both divisions and of all series of those divisions follows.

As the official repository for the Society, the Archives Center will continue to add SHOT records to its holdings.  A "Continuing Contributions Container List" in a separate binder has been established to record donations that have been received from the Society and its members.  This container list describes the materials as the Archives Center receives them, and details the dispersal or arrangement of the materials by the archivist.  It is available in the repository.

RELATED COLLECTIONS

MELVIN KRANZBERG PAPERS constitute collection # 266, in the National Museum of American History's Archives Center.

The S. COLUM GILFILLAN PAPERS, 1924-1975 have been designated as Archives Center collection # 461. Gilfillan was a charter member of SHOT in 1958. These papers include some correspondence, particularly with Melvin Kranzberg, concerning articles that he published in SHOT's journal, Technology and Culture.

In the Smithsonian Institution Archives are administrative records of the Director's office and several senior curators of the National Museum of American History, which also contain information on SHOT, e.g. the BROOKE HINDLE PAPERS, 1944-1985 Record Unit # 7363.

PROVENANCE

The SHOT Records were donated by Melvin Kranzberg to the Archives Center on August 29, 1988, along with his personal papers. The Society for the History of Technology approved his donation and the Society has designated the National Museum of American History as the official repository for its records. The papers of other officers have been added to Series 10: Continuing Contributions, as they have been received in the years since Dr. Kranzberg's initial donation.
