This dress was made for the donor's mother, a long time client of Oscar de la Renta. She was the first to commission a dress designed by de la Renta, while he was studying in Spain. In the 1950s her husband was the American ambassador to Spain. De la Renta later made this dress for her to wear to various diplomatic events. Her daughter, as the wife of the Spanish ambassador to the United States, again wore the dress in 1998 to the Hispanic Designers Gala in Washington, D.C., which de la Renta also attended.
