| John Paul Jones with a spyglass
in one hand and an anchor under the other, 1779. Jones was a Scottish
seaman who settled in America and led the American naval campaign
in European waters during the Revolutionary War. This mezzotint,
engraved by I. E. Haid in Augsburg, is but one of many portrait
prints created after Jones and his men captured the British Serapis.
It was probably not done from life, but based on fictitious portraits
of American officers published in London. National Portrait Gallery
