
The following table provides a list of the Emperors of the
Byzantine Empire combined with an inventory of the coins of each Emperor in the National
Numismatic Collection. Not all of the Byzantine rulers produced coins, and, of those that did, not all are
represented in this collection. A coin of each Emperor for which the NNC has an example can be viewed by
clicking his/her name highlighted in blue. The abbreviations at the top of each column are as follows:
AU for gold, EL for electrum, AR for silver, and AE for bronze. The parenthesized "N" following the
names of Emperors ruling between 1204 and 1261 identifies the Emperors in exile at Nicaea in Asia Minor
during the period of Latin rule at Constantinople after its capture by Crusaders during the Fourth Crusade.
