Agriculture - Overview
From butter churns to diesel tractors, the Museum's agricultural artifacts trace the story of Americans who work the land. Agricultural tools and machinery in the collections range from a John Deere plow of the 1830s to 20th-century cultivators and harvesters. The Museum's holdings also include overalls, aprons, and sunbonnets; farm photographs; milk cans and food jars; handmade horse collars; and some 200 oral histories of farm men and women in the South. Prints in the collections show hundreds of scenes of rural life. The politics of agriculture are part of the story, too, told in materials related to farm workers' unions and a group of artifacts donated by the family of the labor leader Cesar Chavez.

Agriculture [series], 1786-1971
- Summary
- Primarily trade catalogs, printed advertisements, correspondence on letterhead stationery, price lists, bills, receipts, addresses, envelopes, advertising cards, reports, manuals, memorandum books, fair tickets, lithographs, photographs, almanacs, etc., from manufacturers and distributors of farming machinery and implements. Many agricultural tools and products are represented. Also includes material from agricultural societies, such as the American Agricultural Association and the Livestock Society of America, and from experiment stations, along with general publications and periodicals

- Summary
- Consists primarily of almanacs, circa 1733-1981. Also includes diaries, memorandum books, family manuals, ladies' handbooks and a few medical guides

California (series), circa 1878-1958
- Summary
- This series primarily concerns tourism, business development and emigration. A number of brochures promoting emigration to California in the early 20th century are present. Some of these brochures were created by the California Promotion Committee, a statewide chamber of commerce. The Tourism subseries contains guidebooks, souvenirs and brochures from San Diego and San Francisco, as well as a substantial amount of early 20th century railroad-related materials

Seed industry and trade (series), circa 1831-1981
- Summary
- Primarily illustrated catalogs, invoices and receipts, price lists, advertisements, advertising cards, almanacs, business cards, circulars, correspondence, lithographs, seed packages, pamphlets and guides from companies involved in the seed industry and trade, including seed growers, merchants, nurseries, auctioneers, importers and exporters. Includes a number of images, as well as monographs from the Luther Burbank Society, which discuss what the Society termed the "improvement of the human plant."

John K. Parlett Agriculture Collection, 1850s-2005
- Notes
- John K. Parlett was born in St. Mary's County, Maryland, and was a life-long resident of the county and state. He was a farmer and businessman as well as a state legislator, serving as a St. Mary's County Commissioner from 1974-1978 and then as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from 1981-1986. Parlett and his wife were passionate collectors of agricultural antique artifacts as well as archival materials
- Summary
- The collection contains farming and rural life ephemera, dating from about 1877 to 2005. The materials include agricultural ephemera from all regions of the United States. The collection is not livestock or crop specific, and includes materials on dairying, beekeeping, livestock, and crops including tobacco, small grains, hay and forage. It includes almanacs, operator's manuals, catalogues, promotional materials, pocket ledgers and notebooks, mail order catalogs, state fair advertising and catalogues, livestock care and feeding manuals, correspondence, receipts, guarantees, chemical and fertilizer handbooks, account books, "Ladies'" notebooks and calendars, directories, price lists, corporate "yearbooks," clothing advertisements and catalogues, farming practices handbooks, agents' order books, seed guides, National Grange material, farming co-op by-laws and ephemera, agriculture related convention materials, poultry magazines and journals, beekeeping magazines, barn and housing design material, gardening manuals, sales contracts for machinery, appliance manuals, commodity marketing guides, auction catalogues, home canning and meat processing manuals and guides, price lists, and dealer service manuals
