Balm of America: Patent Medicine Collection

About the Collection
The Smithsonian Institution began to collect objects related to health and medicine in 1881. It first obtained examples of patent medicines in 1930, acquiring packages of Haarlem Oil (or Dutch Drops), Dr. John Hooper’s Female Pills, and Roche’s Herbal Embrocation. Since then the Smithsonian’s collection of patent medicines has expanded to over 4,000 products, dating from the 19th century to the present day.

This group of objects features examples from this collection, found in the Division of Medicine and Science at the National Museum of American History. Each entry includes a photo of the object, the product’s name, maker’s name, place of manufacture, and a date range. The indications or uses for this product as provided by the manufacturer are: Female diseases; where a sexual tonic is necessary to bring about a regular and perfect function to the female organization, increase flow where it is scanty, improve appetite and digestion, suppressed menstruation that may be due to cold, debility of the blood, or ovaries. Cures prolapsus or falling of the womb, leucorrhoea or whites, ulcerations and kindred affections at the dreaded period of cessation, or change of life, which is often characterized by headache, fainting spells, general debility, spasmodic affections, hypochondria, melancholy, pains in the loins or limbs, apparent letting down of the whole system, hysteria, etc. Anemia

Specially good for diseases common to women, particularly recommended for the many affectations which occur at the changes of life, such as flushing, sweatings, headache, tremblings, sleeplessness, nervousness, irritibility, etc. etc.

The label on this container reads in part “JAYNE’S / SANATIVE PILLS / CONCENTRATED / SMALL SIZE, SUGAR-COATED & / IMPROVED. . .” There are two green and white 1/8th cent Internal Revenue Stamps, stamped Dr. D. J. & S., 7/1/1898. This firm, one of the first patent medicine companies to use an almanac as a marketing tool, printed their first almanac in 1843. David Jayne (1799-1866) began life in modest circumstances, but left an estate worth $3 million.
