Mintage: 2,976,453
Until the treasure of the S.S. Central America was discovered, the 1861 Philadelphia issue was the most common Type 1 double eagle. This is the issue most collectors thought of when trying to find an acceptable example of the type. The large mintage, the highest of any double eagle until 1904, makes the 1861 a common issue in most grades. Choice pieces are actually very rare. There have only been about 60 coins certified at that level. The finest known example of the date by far is an MS-67 coin. Nearly 500 examples of the date were found on the S.S. Republic. Most were in grades from AU-58 to MS-62.

Description
Low-grade examples of the 1855 double eagle are fairly common. The issue becomes increasingly rare in high-grade condition. There were examples of the date found on the S.S. Central America and S.S. Republic. Most of these were Extremely Fine or About Uncirculated, but a few were on the low end of the Mint State scale. The 1855 double eagle is a true condition rarity. Nearly all of the known examples of this date are low grade.

Description
The California gold rush quickly gave the United States not one new gold coin, but two: a tiny gold dollar at the lower end of the monetary spectrum, and a large double eagle, or twenty-dollar coin, at the upper end. Why did Americans need more gold denominations?
So much gold was now coming out of California that it was actually lowering the value of that metal against silver. Bullion dealers began buying up silver dollars and half dollars for melting and export, for they were now worth more than face value as bullion. A Congressman from North Carolina had an idea: If gold dollars were struck, to pass at par with the silver ones, it might ease some of the pressure on silver coinage.
His bill was introduced late in January 1849. At the last minute, a provision was added for an entirely new coin, a double eagle. Thus amended, the bill became law on March 3, 1849. The production of gold dollars swung into action fairly quickly, and coinage had gotten under way by early May.
But the double eagles took longer. James B. Longacre, the artist selected to design the new large coin, encountered initial opposition from Mint officials, and it was late December before the first two pattern double eagles could be struck. One disappeared long ago, leaving this as the only surviving gold pattern from 1849.

Description
Designs as used on earlier double eagles, but with tall letters for legends on reverse. This unique pattern combined the normal obverse by James B. Longacre with an experimental reverse by Anthony C. Paquet. Paquet's innovation was to recast the letters in the reverse legend. Those letters had been block capitals on all earlier double eagles. Paquet introduced a new, more vertical format for the letters.
A few thousand coins with the Paquet reverse were minted in San Francisco at the beginning of 1861 (and a handful more at Philadelphia that same year). However, Paquet's innovation did not find favor at that time. [reference no. Judd 272a]

Mintage: 577,670
The population data show that the 1860 double eagle is rather plentiful in circulated condition. There was also a significant quantity found on the S.S. Republic. The ship contained nearly 100 coins, a few of which have been certified as MS-64 or MS-65. Three or four MS-64 coins have been offered at auction in the last few years. The Smithsonian examples for the issue are very modest.

Mintage: 2,053,026
The mintage of double eagles continued in large numbers at the Philadelphia Mint in 1853. The date is one of the more common Type 1 double eagles. The treasure of the S.S. Central America contained nearly 30 coins of the date, and the S.S. Republic yielded nearly 100
examples. Only about a dozen in those two groups are of Mint State quality.
