This cornet was made by Joseph Higham in Manchester, England around 1858 to 1860. It is a B-flat cornet, serial #4735, made of silver plated brass and has 3 rotary valves. This cornet is engraved:

PATENT [/] BY HER [/] MAJESTY'S [/] ROYAL LETTERS [/] J. HIGHAM [/] MAKER [/] INVENTOR & PATENTEE [/] VICTORIA BRIDGE [/] MANCHESTER [/] 4735

Joseph Higham (1818-1883) was awarded British Patent #123, January 15, 1857, for “Improvements in valve musical instruments.”
