Balance

Description
This is a small balance with 5.5-inch steel beam, and 2.4-inch brass pans. The case is wood, covered with leather, marked on top: “Finest Paris Scales and Weights / manufactured expressly for / G. W. Carpenter Phila: U. States.” This refers to George W. Carpenter, proprietor of an important chemical warehouse in Philadelphia in the mid-nineteenth century.
