I am currently abstracting some estate records in Laurens County, Georgia and am reviewing purchases made by a James Stanley with the firm of Fordham & Billue in Wilkinson County. Twice in 1849, he purchased a bottle of ox marrow and paid 12 and 1/2 cents for it. At the time of the 2nd purchase, he also purchased 4 lbs of shot, percussion caps, and one lb of powder. My conjecture is that he used it for either a gun oil or a lubricant for seating the bullet in his musket. Regards,
