Microscope

Description
This is a heavy brass compound monocular with coarse and fine focus, square mechanical stage, trunnion, sub-stage mirror, V-shaped base, and wooden box with eyepieces and objectives. On one piece an image of a globe is placed between the words “TRADE MARK” and an image of an open eye.
A paper tag reading “Dissecting Microscopes / Property of R. Rathbun” may refer to Richard Rathbun (1852-1918), Smithsonian scientist and Under-Secretary. We note, however, that this is not a dissecting microscope.
