Metal Stencil, Pedroncelli Winery

Shipping bulk wine in wooden barrels was widely practiced in the period following the Repeal of Prohibition in 1933, since many wineries did not have bottling operations in place at the time. Each barrel had to be marked with the winery’s name and bonded number, as well as its contents, before shipment.
This hand-cut tin stencil was made to fit on the head of a standard barrel; once paint was applied and the stencil removed, the identifying information was left on the surface. This stencil provided a wealth of information: “Produced and Packed by John Pedroncelli / B.W. [bonded winery] No. 113 / 14th Dist. Cal. / Gyserville [sic] Calif. / Serial No. / California Claret / Alcohol 13% by Volume / Geyserville Sonoma Co. Cal.” Of note is the “California Claret” designation, which was a generic term used for red wine before labeling of varietals (specific grape types) became the norm in the 1970s.
