Drawer for Storing Punch Cards

Description:

From the 1890s, punched paper cards were used to store data for tabulating machines and then, from the 1950s, for electronic computers. This metal drawer was used in the 1970s to transport computer punch cards at the Smithsonian Institution, and was received from the Computer Services Center of the National Museum of American History. It is marked at the back: TAB PRODUCTS CO. The firm TAB Products Company was founded in Deleware in 1954 by two former IBM salesmen. It sold a variety of file boxes and containers for offices using computers, and then moved on to other products.
