Balance

Description
This micro-chemical balance was used in the Oakwold Laboratory in Alexandria, Virginia, one of the first commercial microanalytical laboratories in the United States. It has a wooden frame with glass sides. The inscription on a tag reads “MADE BY / WILH. H. F. KUHLMANN / HAMBURG GERMANY / SOLD BY ARTHUR H. THOMAS CO. / PHILADA. U.S.A.” The beam is marked “WILH. H. F. KUHLMANN HAMBURG.” There is a small telescope for reading the scale.
