Basket

Description:

Raised, rectangular boat-shaped basket with deep curved well and everted rim that extends at both ends to incurved, scrolled-under, horizontal cylindrical handles. Applied, cast grape clusters at centers of both ends. Die-stamped bands of roses are at rim, interrupted by three pendant shells and leafy scrolls placed along sides, and at bottom atop four cast griffin feet. Underside of rounded bottom struck "FLETCHER & GARDINER" and "PHILAD\A/." both in raised roman letters in rectangles. Centerpoint visible.

Maker is Fletcher & Gardner (Thomas Fletcher [1787-1866] and Sidney Gardiner [1785-1827]), while working in Philadelphia, 1811-1827.
