This is a large counter balance painted green with gold trim. The platform is glass. The frame of the scale is marked “DETROIT AUTOMATIC SCALE CO. / DISTRIBUTORS. DETROIT, MICH.” The inscription near the bottom reads “Detroit Automatic / SCALE COMPANY Distributors.” That on a metal plaque in the middle reads “706403 / PATENTED / JULY 3, 1900 / MAY 19, 1901. MARCH 27, 1907 / OTHERS PENDING / CAPACITY 100 LBS.”
Walter Franklin Stimpson (1870-1942), then of Milan, Michigan, designed a computing scale in 1894, applied for a patent (issued as #543,323 on July 23, 1895), organized the Stimpson Computing Scale Co., and moved to Elkhart, Indiana. This firm was renamed the Detroit Automatic Scale Co. in 1912.
