Brunsviga Calculating Machine Component

Description:

This object was collected by Brooklyn high school teacher and historian of mathematics L. Leland Locke and held by the Museums of the Peaceful Arts in New York City before coming to the Smithsonian. A shaft rests in a frame. It carries a set of thirteen numeral wheels and a set of eight smaller numeral wheels. The digits on the first set of wheels are white, those on the second set white and red. Wing nuts for zeroing are at each end, a bell is on the left, and a lever is in front.
