REO Wolverine Radiator Emblem

This radiator emblem belonged to a Wolverine automobile that was manufactured by the REO Motor Car Company of Lansing, Michigan, in 1927 and 1928. While REO did produce their own automobiles, the Wolverine was an assembled car that featured a six valves Continental engine on a 114 inch wheelbase. The factory price for a Brougham model was $1195, while the price fora sedan was $1295. The circular emblem has lettering around the outside that reads “WOLVERINE/ REO MOTOR CAR CO. A winged inner circle features a central number “6” on a blue enamel background, with a wolverine crawling through the six.
Radiator emblems are small, colorful metal plates bearing an automobile manufacturer's name or logo that attached to the radiators grilles of early automobiles. Varying in shape and size, the emblems served as a small branding device, sometimes indicating the type of engine, place of manufacturing, or using an iconic image or catchy slogan to advertise their cars make and model. This emblem is part of the collection that was donated by Hubert G. Larson in 1964.
