Prom Dress

This flowered prom dress was worn by Josephine Boyd Carpenter in 1956. The white empire-waist dress has short sleeves, a ruffled belt-line, and rings of white and purple flowers. Josephine donated her dress along with her grandfather’s John Covert Boyd’s papers to the museum in 1993. Dr. John Covert Boyd (1850-1924) was a renowned surgeon who served as the medical director of the United States Navy and on the Board of Incorporators of the American Red Cross.
