James Locke's tool chest, complete with almost all of his tools, survives from the early 1800s. Its dozens of planes, gauges and chisels reveal the skills a cabinetmaker possessed. In the hands of a skilled craftsman tools like these produced exquisitely detailed and finely finished furniture.
