A tool chest need not be beautiful to declare the skill and
training of its user. Charles King built
this box from scrap lumber and carried it for many years
along the sidewalks of Washington, D.C. Wax, brushes, and
polishing rags were easily stowed below the carrying handle
that doubled as the customer's foot-rest. The worn and
well-used appearance of this kit served as an advertisement
to customers by suggesting the prospect of a high-quality
shoeshine.
