The temperance movement
predated Prohibition. It was led by women
who saw alcohol abuse deprive women
and children of husbands and fathers,
personal safety, and income. The
Women's Christian Temperance Union
organized to make Prohibition a reality.
WCTU chapters raised money for their
cause by selling small pins in the shape
of metal axes (for Carry Nation's saloon-dismantling ax), paper fans carrying the
Temperance Pledge, and other tokens.
