Temperance Fan The temperance movement predated Prohibition. It was led by women who saw alcohol abuse deprive women and children of husbands and fathers, personal safety, and income. The Women's Christian Temperance Union organized to make Prohibition a reality. WCTU chapters raised money for their cause by selling small pins in the shape of metal axes (for Carry Nation's saloon-dismantling ax), paper fans carrying the Temperance Pledge, and other tokens.
