Photo-portrait of Mina Miller

Mina Miller, at the time of her marriage to Edison, 1886.

Edison's first wife, Mary Stilwell, died in 1884, leaving him with three small children. Early the following year he met Mina Miller, the nineteen-year old daughter of Akron businessman Louis Miller. A manufacturer of agricultural machinery, Louis was studying in Boston and was an acquaintance of Edison's friend, Ezra Gilliland.

Edison managed to see Mina several times that spring and summer and proposed that September. They were married in February 1886. Although young, Mina's upbringing and personality prepared her admirably for dealing with her famous husband and for being a mother to her three step-children as well as the three she and Edison had together.
