Innoskate

Innoskate is a major public festival that will celebrate invention and creativity in skate culture. Innoskate will highlight the contributions skate innovators make to society through demonstrations, hands-on education activities, public programs with inventors and innovators, and donations of objects to the national collections. Activities will also include discussions and demonstrations of evolving technology such as decks, wheels, trucks, board design, materials, etc., as well as innovations in tricks that fueled further technological innovations. Hands-on activities related to skate culture may include aspects of board design and fabrication, use of new materials, and/or the engineering and physics of making decks and performing tricks.

Bones Brigade: An Autobiography
(2012, 90 min) This documentary from Stacy Peralta looks at the Bones Brigade, six teenage boys who came together as a skateboarding team in the 1980s. Follow along as they reinvent not only their chosen sport, but also themselves as they evolve from insecure outsiders to the most influential athletes in the field. Discussion with original members Tony Hawk and Rodney Mullen follows.

Celebrate invention and creativity in skate culture and learn about the contributions skate innovators make to society. After a donation of skateboard artifacts to the national sports history collections, hear panel discussions about skate technology, fashion, and tricks with panelists Tony Hawk and Paul Schmitt. Also enjoy skate demonstrations by pro and invited skaters.

Please note: To accomodate the program, Madison Drive (along the south side of the Museum) will be closed between 7th and 14th Streets from 10am to 6pm.

(2012, 96 min) This film documents pro skateboarder Danny Way's tough childhood and his contributions to the sport and features footage of his jump over the Great Wall of China. Discussion follows.
