I Want the Wide American Earth

An Asian Pacific American Story

Closed August 25, 2013

The Smithsonian celebrates Asian Pacific American history across a multitude of diverse cultures and explores how Asian Pacific Americans have shaped and been shaped by the course of our nation's history. Rich with compelling stories and images, this 30-banner exhibition took a sweeping look at this history, from the very first Asian immigrants centuries ago to the complex challenges facing Asian Pacific American communities today.

For Asian Pacific American Heritage Month 2013, the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center opened the exhibition, I Want the Wide American Earth: An Asian Pacific American Story, at the National Museum of American History. Taking Bulosan's poem as inspiration, this exhibition told the stories of the builders and workers of Asian Pacific America.

I Want the Wide American Earth exhibition was made possibly by a generous grant from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation and is a collaborative initiative with the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES). The exhibition will travel to museums and cultural institutions across the country; learn more about the national tour.
