The Smithsonian hosts Jazz Appreciation Month to draw public attention to the history of jazz and its importance in American culture. Interns assist in advertising and coordinating Museum programs, answering public inquiries, and communicating with jazz organizations and schools nationwide.
Qualifications for all music internships:
- Interest in and knowledge of jazz, both musical and historical
- Word processing and library research skills
- Strong organizational, and communications skills
Interns research the history of jazz, including both the emerging musical styles and the cultural changes brought about by the medium.
The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra (SJMO), the orchestra-in-residence at the National Museum of American History, seeks to explore, present, promote, and perpetuate the historical legacy of jazz. Interns will assist the SJMO producer with concert production and other jazz-related projects. Duties may include music library evaluation, marketing, and participation in management meetings.
