Object 27 [of 66] – Blowtorch Julia made another signature tool besides the whisk, a blowtorch which she taught cooks to use for browning meringue (example: Baked Alaska) and for caramelizing creeme brulee. Though it was yet another effective TV prop, it was also a new way of doing something difficult that Julia introduced to an entertained, but newly educable cook. Aspiring cooks who saw the torch went to hardware stores and demanded them, not for welding, but for cooking. Now, small, specialized "cook's" blowtorches have replaced the old huge hardware store torches and tanks–just another innovation she popularized.
