for Philips 60-watt, Longer Life Lamp, 1988 from Philips Lighting Company Packages play a major role in conveying technology and information about technology to consumers. This package instantly announces its contents (the illustration and the words "60 watts" and "4 bulbs"), adds something appealing ("Longer Life" and "Soft White"), and offers specific information for consumers who might look into the details ("1350 Average Hours - 840 Average Lumens"). The white background of this prototype was eventually rejected as not visible enough and a dark background selected instead. One part of the Energy Policy Act of 1992
(EPAct) specified that certain information, such as lumen rating, must appear on lamp packages.
The reason is that light is measured in lumens, not watts, yet most people purchase light bulbs by
wattage. If consumers can be educated to think in terms of lumens, perhaps more will select energy efficient lamps – at least that is the hope of those who drafted
EPAct. This
object is a plastic covered, corrugated
paper sleeve. Stored flat, it measures 7.25 inches high by 2.75 inches wide. All
four sides are seen above. |
