Efficient Residential Lamps at Lawrence Berkeley Lab

Rudy Verderber (left) and Sam Berman demonstrate an assortment of experimental energy-efficient lamps in 1983. These include four different types of compact fluorescent lamps, some miniature metal-halide lamps, and an improved incandescent lamp, all developed as part of the Lighting Research Program at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Verderber was project manager for the program, and Berman a senior scientist. The U.S. Department of Energy funded the work, extending an effort begun by the earlier Energy Research and Development Agency. DOE continues to support research, development, and testing of energy efficient lighting technology.

Several of the lamps in this photograph were donated to the Smithsonian's Electricity Collections in 1992.
