General HistoryKnown as the "Springfield 03" this gun was adopted by the army as a replacement for the Krag-Jorgensen rifle. Over 1 million Springfield rifles were made by the time World War I ended. Production of the Springfield, however, continued up to and through World War II, when at least another million were shipped. Originally fitted with a rod bayonet, a new knife bayonet was ordered 1905 by order of President Theodore Roosevelt.
