Engineer sits at right. Controls at right are mainly brakes (two brake systems, with an early form of Automatic Train Stop) and throttle, with lever for whistle.
Fireman sits/stands at left. Controls at left are mainly for regulation of the steam-powered 'automatic [coal] stoker'. (Manual shoveling still was required: see information under 'Fireman's Scoop (Shovel),' Cat 1986.0736.01.
In center of picture is the gray-painted 'firedoor,' through which a fireman shovels coal into the firebox. This type of firedoor called a 'Butterfly Door,' because of the way the two halves of the door swing aside to open.
This type of firedoor was also a safety feature: if a boiler tube explosively ruptured and suddenly blew hot steam and live coals from inside the hot firebox toward the door, the door could not be blown open.
