Charles E. Duryea is at the steering lever of the Duryea motor wagon (1895) that won the first automobile race held in the U.S.A. It was held Thanksgiving Day 1895, from Chicago to Evanston and back. The vehicle was powered by a 2-cylinder, opposed, water-cooled motor of 4 hp. It had a maximum speed of 20 mph, but during the race only averaged 7.5 mph.
