It was taken in the area known as Market Square, at Pennsylvania Avenue between 7th street and 9th street, which was the largest market in Washington, D. C. There were vendors inside and surrounding the market. Across the streets or at the nearby plaza, which no longer exists, street vendors were allowed to set up their carts. Because it was in major business district, several streetcar lines serviced the area.
