This image was made in September 1999 by the Landsat 7 satellite as it passed 438 miles above Los Angeles. The view stretches 137 miles along the California coast. Landsat 7 detects visible and infrared light reflected by Earth's surface. In this image, colors have been manipulated to differentiate land-cover types. Green colors indicate vegetation, while urban surfaces are purple.
