John Caprino, clerk in the Cook County Recorders' Office, recording deeds transferring ownership of the Chicago Surface Lines and Chicago Rapid Transit companies to the newly-created Chicago Transit Authority on September 30, 1947.

History |
|
The 1947 transfer of ownership of most of Chicago's privately-owned surface and rapid transit companies to public ownership was the culmination of more than twenty years of political wrestling. The newly-formed Chicago Transit Authority had no power to tax, no subsidization, and was required to raise money for daily operation and much needed modernization from fares.
