"In 1933 President Franklin D. Roosevelt included the Columbia River Basin Project, a proposal to dam the Columbia River, in his Public Works Administration program. The Grand Coulee Dam, one of the largest concrete structures in the world, stands 550 feet with a width of more than 500 feet at its base to 30 feet at its top. Its reservoir, Franklin D. Roosevelt Lake, extends 151 miles to the Canadian border, with 600 miles of shoreline around its 82,000 arce surface. The dam, completed in 1941, is operated for power production, irrigation, flood control, river regulation, navigation, and downstream power productioni. The Grand Coulee power facilities consist of the Left, Right, and Third Powerplants and a pump-generating plant. Power produced at Grand Coulee is distributed and marketed throughout the Northwest by the Bonneville Power Administration. The U.S. Bureau of Reclimation built and operates the Columbia Basin Project, including the Grand Coulee Dam."
