"Deregulation Perspectives - A
Variety of Perspectives"
This section has been removed. The high visibility of the restructuring / deregulation debate has far outstripped our ability to track it. Ordinary Internet search engines can quickly lead interested researchers to perspectives from many sources.
"References and Links"
The links for all sections have been updated.
Update: December 2004
"Deregulation Perspectives - A
Variety of Perspectives"
The links for this section have been updated.
"Understanding Deregulation"
The "PJM & LMP: April 1998" in the section "Recent
Historical Events" has been updated with a note regarding the expansion
of the PJM Interconnect.
"References and Links"
The links for all sections have been updated.
"Visions of Power"
The section "Marketing Electric Power Today" has been removed. While we
are including modern advertising in our documentation effort, the amount
of material is thus far slight. Given limited resources we will focus
in future updates on expanding the section covering early advertising.
Update: September 2002
"Powering The Past"
Richard Hirsh has written a new section called "Early
Results" that gives a brief overview of the first few years of
the restructuring/deregulation story. He recounts the experiences of California,
Pennsylvania and Virginiacomparing how restructuring has differed
in each.
"Deregulation Perspectives - A
Variety of Perspectives"
The links for this section have been updated. Also, the resignation of
William McCormick from CMS Energy has been noted in the preface of his
1997 interview.
"References and Links"
A glossary of terms from the Salt River Project has been added in the
"Web Glossaries" section.
Among other additions, links to the texts of FERC Orders 888 and 2000
have been added to the section Resources
on the World Wide Web".
To complement the biographic sketch of Dr. Hirsh, we have added brief
bio-sketches of the Smithsonian curatorial staff directly involved with
Powering.
Visitors who may have bookmarked so-called deep links to
various pages of this site should be aware that those links may no longer
function. We have cleaned-up the site's file structure. No pages were
removed, however.
Update: December 2001
The first new feature for this update of Powering is this "What's
New" page, that we hope will assist frequent visitors to the site.
"Throw The Switch - Electricity Basics"
We have updated the fuel cell diagram for our example of chemical generation.
There is also a link to a new Smithsonian site,
"Collecting The History of Fuel Cells", for those who would like to
learn more about these increasingly important devices.
"Powering The Past"
Our brief bio-sketch of Richard Hirsh has been updated to reflect the
completion of his recent book, Power Loss: The Origins of Deregulation
and Restructuring in the American Electric Utility System. Those interested
in this topic will find it a very informative work.
"Understanding Deregulation"
This has not been updated. Both the meltdown of California's electricity
market during 2001 and the surprising downfall of Enron certainly qualify
as historically important "Recent Events." However, we do not have sufficient
details on either event at this point and so will tackle these topics
at a later date. There are links pertaining to the California issue in
our "Variety of Perspectives" and "Resources on the World Wide Web" sections.
"Deregulation Perspectives - A Variety of Perspectives"
The links for this section have been updated.
"References and Links"
Links to the texts of various pertinent laws have been added to the section "Resources on the World Wide Web". These include PUHCA, PURPA, EPACT and
the Federal Power Act. There are several new links in the "Web Glossaries"
section.
Remember, if you know of materials or links pertaining to restructuring
that might be of interest to the Powering A Generation Project, you can
send an e-mail to Powering@si.edu.
Please include a description of the materials and a return address.
