Although virtually every group in the United States has demanded the right to vote, many Americans who have this right do not exercise it. In recent presidential elections only about 50 percent of the voting-age population went to the polls. In the past, local political parties were primarily responsible for getting out the vote. Increasingly, national special-interest groups have sought to motivate their constituents, who often seem indifferent to the pleas of the candidates. |
