Statement by John Gray, Director

National Museum of American History

Following the recent events in Charlottesville, Va. and the conversations in which Americans are engaged, the Director of National Museum of American History issued the following statement:

In this polarized moment, when a real understanding of our shared American history is so needed, we are working to bring the nation together. Here at the Museum, our mission is clear: We help people understand the past in order to make sense of the present, and shape a more humane future. The National Museum of American History is in support of the statement issued by the National Trust for Historic Preservation concerning Confederate memorials and the Atlanta History Center’s interpretation guide for Confederate monuments.
