Raphael's paintings of the School of Athens in the Vatican Stanze represent the great Greek philosophers and their pupils. A number of engravers produced prints of these portraits over three centuries. During his stay in Italy, Cranch purchased many reproductive engravings after paintings by Raphael, Michelangelo, and other Italian artists.
