The Honorable Barbara H. Franklin is President and CEO of Barbara Franklin Enterprises, a private international consulting firm. She is an adviser to American companies doing business internationally. She is an expert on corporate governance, auditing, and financial reporting practices. Prior to this, she held a number of government positions, including serving as the 29th US Secretary of Commerce under President George H.W. Bush, an original Commissioner of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, and a staff assistant to President Richard Nixon. In that role, she led the first White House effort to increase the number of women in high-level, policy-making positions, a story which was told in the book, A Matter of Simple Justice: The Untold Story of Barbara Hackman Franklin and A Few Good Women. Altogether, Ms. Franklin has served five U.S. Presidents and received the Woodrow Wilson Award for Public Service. TIME magazine named her one of the “50 Women who Made American Political History” and she was awarded a “Lifetime Achievement Award in US-China Relations.” Ms. Franklin has also served on the board of directors for 14 public companies, including Aetna, Inc., Dow Chemical, Westinghouse, and Nordstrom, four private companies, and many not-for-profit organizations. She served as chairman of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), has received numerous awards, and was inducted in the NACD Directorship Hall of Fame, the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame, and the Financial Executives International Hall of Fame. She is a current board member of the LafargeHolcim International Advisory Board, the U.S.-China Business Council, the Atlantic Council, the Nixon Foundation, and the National Symphony Orchestra. She graduated with distinction from the Pennsylvania State University and was one of the first women graduates of the Harvard Business School. She resides in Washington, DC and Bristol, CT.
