Description: New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani used this cell phone on September 11, 2001.

Context: Communication is critical in a disaster or emergency situation. Arriving at the World Trade Center just after the second plane hit, New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani remained at the center of the crisis for the next sixteen hours. At first he went to the city’s emergency command center on the 23rd floor of World Trade Center Building 7, but he was evacuated after the second plane hit and as debris from the towers threatened the building. In the immediate aftermath of the collapse of the World Trade Center towers, the mayor used this phone as he walked north to safer ground.
