Each original transcription includes historical and performance notes. Scores are edited by David Baker, Music Director of Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. Price: $25-$45/title for conductor's score and part or $6-$10 for conductor's score. For a complete list of available scores, view the Essential Jazz Editions catalog (PDF). Tribute to a Generation: A Salute to the Big Bands of the WWII Era
The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra
During World War II the big band music of Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Glenn Miller and others was the soundtrack of life on the home-front. This music also reached the battlefront through recordings and broadcasts where familiar tunes and bands became a metaphor for the way of life that American soldiers were fighting to preserve. Playing original arrangements, the Smithsonian Jazz Masterwork Orchestra pays tribute to this musical inspiration in the World War II years. Extensive notes, 36 page booklet, 17 tracks, an hour of music. To listen to sample tracks and purchase the CD, visit the Smithsonian Folkways Recordings Web site.
Jazz Masterworks Editions, a program of the Department of Education, Public Programs and Outreach at the Smithsonian Institution, is dedicated to the publication of performance and scholarly editions of enduring works of classic jazz. These three performance editions, “Daybreak Express,” “Take the ‘A’ Train” and “Sepia Panorama,” are intended to be performed by student or professional bands.
